Stefanie Starr

My name is Stefanie Starr and I am first-year Ph.D. student in Environmental
Engineering at NC State University. I work in Dr. Knappe’s lab and my research focuses
on the thermal reactivation of spent granular activated carbon in PFAS remediation. We
are currently working on developing strategies that can effectively mineralize adsorbed
PFAS and prevent the release of products of incomplete combustion and hydrogen
fluoride in the air. Outside of coursework and research, I spend time with my family –
my 4-year old daughter and husband – exploring North Carolina. Fun fact about me: I
have been an active duty U.S. Army Officer for the last 7 years.
